NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) this week released EnergyPlus V9-1-0-SM, a custom version of its EnergyPlus platform, following a request from Melbourne-based technology company Setmetrics for new and tailored functionality.
Setmetrics proprietary ‘digital twin’ cloud service allows users to rapidly create an accurate digital twin of a building, unlocking hourly energy consumption forecasts and powerful project optimization tools. The unique “Software as a Service” (SaaS) platform optimizes the efficient operation of commercial buildings, including specific recommendations for equipment.
The platform provides powerful analytical and forecasting tools that leverage advanced simulation and AI technologies, and is underpinned by EnergyPlus, a gold standard energy modeling engine developed by NREL. Supported by the US Department of Energy, NREL collaborates with industry to find creative answers to today’s energy challenges, including developing and maintaining EnergyPlus building energy simulation software.
Adam Muiznieks, Setmetrics Head of Product, described the challenge: “We were approached by an OEM supplier to model a high-spec HVAC system for a customers’ buildings. The air conditioning system has the potential to deliver significant energy savings, but it could not be modelled.
“Setmetrics approached NREL for additional data, in a collaboration that resulted in a custom release of EnergyPlus. With the additional input, Setmetrics was able to tailor a solution for its customer, successfully modelling the HVAC system to identify improvement opportunities,” he said.
“This is a great example of how Setmetrics technology can be applied to real-life challenges to deliver ongoing operational efficiencies and energy savings” said Mr Muiznieks.
